Madhubani

A folk art dating back to the times of the Hindu epic The Ramayana, the designs were originally used as a tattoo on women, to depict local stories and legends or to commemorate special ceremonies or festivals. it is believed that the artists have been painting on canvas and paper within only the last 50 years. The Godna women strongly believe that every surface is a potential canvas for beautiful design, from the walls of their homes to their skin to their paper & canvas surfaces. Madhubani art is recognised by the miniature paintings of figures. Their paintings comprise of long folk tales that are told through these miniatures. Usually no area of the painting is left blank or untouched; every part of the painting is covered either by lines or color with the use of self made tools and paints.
