Dwindling Forests

The morphing nature of these animal figures can be explained by the tribe’s belief in friendship and interconnectivity amongst life’s forms. Loss of forests in recent times have led to diminished animal sightings.

Bhil

The Bhil tribe is an ethnic group inhabiting the Western part of Central India. Well over 1.5 million live as marginal farmers in almost 2000 villages. The members of the Bhil tribe possess a vast array of rich customs and traditions. Their "pointilist" tradition is inspired by the kernels of maize—the Bhil’s staple crop—each group of dots have multiple layers of symbolism. Stories, prayers, ancestors, memories and traditions are skillfully painted into a symphony of multihued and rhythmic dots.
